‘Nizhalkuthu’ is a Kathakali performance by an all women’s troupe from Triponithara. The dance drama was mesmerizing – the facial expressions, the hand movements, the stage presence, costumes and ambience created an unforgetable evening. It took me back to the times; years before when Kathakali was watched in the temple premises and koothambalams all night long.

A kathakali performance enriches one’s visual and audio stimuli like no other dance does- transporting one to another cosmic level, where the audience can dally with the demons, gods and the sages in one evening. Kathakali does not use props or background music. Singers on stage with the chenda players set you on another plane with the music reaching a crescendo at times. The ‘kelikottu’ lures you in and you cannot leave until it’s over, because you don’t want to…

BCKA (Bangalore Club for Kathakali and the Arts) did a wonderful job in bringing this exquisite performance to Bangalore.
